Alan Clark is a multidimensional artist whose original watercolors, oils, drawings, mixed media compositions, and limited edition fine art prints hang in collections across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Europe, and Australia.

Depicting a world of nature and imagination, Clark's work reflects a lifetime of questioning and discovery, and his appreciation of how cultural influences, even from the ancient past, can be transformed into a very personal present.

Born in Indiana, Alan Clark grew up in Maine. He attended the University of Colorado (Sculpture) and Colby College (English Literature). Throughout his career, his paintings and prints, as well as his graphic works in many mediums, have been displayed in group and solo shows in the Northeastern U.S. and Mexico.

Since 1990, Clark has divided his life between mid-coast Maine and Mexico. Highlighting a decade of work created in and influenced by both locations, Blood and Stone: Paintings by Alan Clark, was mounted at the Farnsworth Art Museum in 2004. Clark's work is also part of the permanent collection at the Farnsworth Art Museum.

Clark has moved with equal passion and commitment between painting and writing. He is both poet and playwright. His play for voices, Guerrero, and a companion piece, Heart's Blood, were published as a single volume in 1999, in Mexico. Guerrero was first performed at the Farnsworth Art Museum, and subsequently in Spanish at the Caribbean Festival in 1997.

In 1999, funded by the Mexican government, Heart's Blood was performed as a dramatic monologue in both English and Spanish at the Great Amphitheater at Aktun Chen, Quintna Roo, by Alejandro Reza, with music for cello by Vincent Carver Luke. Clark's plays for theater, The Beast, and The End of It, were premiered in 2000. Most recently, in 2005, Guerrero was performed at Colby College, in Waterville, Maine.

Also in 2005, Clark's solo show, Woman by a Pool - Pages from a Book, combined fine art prints and photographs with original poetry. New poems appeared in 2006 in The Caribbean Writer and The Wolf Moon Journal.

In addition to painting, exhibiting, and reading his poetry at public venues, Clark frequently speaks about the creative process, as in his December 2007 artist talk, "Imagination and Freedom in Paintings," at the Ana Julia Aguado Gallery, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
